Public Value of Urban Parks

The Urban Institute recently published a paper entitled the “Public Value of Urban Parks”. This perspective defined a new view of park systems and recognizes that there are broader contributions that a parks and recreation operation contributes to the community. The paper notes that parks have long been recognized as major contributors to the physical and aesthetics of communities, but now these places are contributing to economic growth, youth development, public health, and quality communities.

A study cited by the Urban Institute noted that parks and recreation facilities are widely embraced by residents, even those who do not use them. Seventy-five percent of the respondents of this particular survey said, “they did not use the parks themselves; however, recognize receiving benefits from them.”

The Urban Institute believes that urban parks will continue to offer broader contributions to the vitality of communities, including:

1. Helping young people choose rewarding paths to adulthood by providing programs and opportunities to build physical, intellectual, emotional, and social health.

2. Helping new entrants to the work force find productive jobs by offering decent employment opportu nities within the community.

3. Helping residents improve their heath by pro viding a place to enjoy fresh air and exercise.

4. Helping citizens join together to make their communities better by encouraging them to participate in parks planning and management.
