He graduated from the Little Rock Police Academy on May 19, 1978, and was assigned to the Patrol Division. This was his assignment on May 14, 1980, when he was shot and killed at Roosevelt and Arch Streets at 3:30 a.m..

On May 14,1980, at 3:30 a.m. the Majik Market store at 5921 E. Roosevelt Road was robbed by two teen aged subjects. At that time, this location was in outside of the city in Pulaski County. At 3:17 a.m., Detective McGuire stopped a yellow Jeep with two subjects in it at Roosevelt and Arch Street for running a red light. Detective McGuire was not aware that these two subjects had just robbed the Majik Market Store. Detective McGuire approached the vehicle and talked with the driver. Detective McGuire turned and walked back to his car and as he was doing so, the drive exited the vehicle and began shooting. Detective McGuire was shot one in the leg and once in the abdomen. Detective McGuire managed to reach his unit and call for help. Officers found Detective McGuire lying in the front seat of his car. He was transported to the University of Arkansas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The suspects fled the scene in the Jeep.

As the case unfolded, Detectives learned that the two occupants of the Jeep were David Russell Butler, 16, of Bloomington, IL. and Edward Eugene Little, 15, of Springfield, IL. These two subjects stole the Jeep and were involve in a shooting near Bloomington, IL. They were arrest on May 14th, by Oklahoma State Police as they fled Arkansas. Police recovered a Dan Wesson .357 Mag. pistol which was loaded with .38 caliber bullets. Edward Little was charge as the shooter in the killing death of Detective McGuire and was sentenced to life in prison. Both are still in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. ( as of Feb. 18, 2000)

Detective McGuire was born November 21, 1956. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs Noel N. McGuire of Hensley, Arkansas. Detective McGuire's parents are still active in the affairs of the Department. Those who graduated Rookie School with Detective McGuire affectionately call his parent "Mom and Dad" because of the guidance and help they gave everyone who knew Don. Detective McGuire was first in his recruit class and because of this, the Department, along with the Civitan Club, established the Noel Dom McGuire Award. The Award is presented to the recruit who scores the  highest overall average during recruit classes conducted throughout the year. This year's (1999) winner is Officer Michael Gray.
