This division is responsible for training recruit officers and
providing in-service schools for veteran officers. Training is consistently monitored and
updated to better prepare officers for any problem they may encounter. Training ranges
from a 20 week recruit school, which consists of firearms training, cultural diversity,
English composition, Arkansas Criminal Law Code, Code Statutes, Rules of Criminal
Procedure, first aid, defensive driving, defensive tactics, domestic violence, instructor
development, and a myriad of other subjects.
The Crime Prevention Unit of the Training Division is responsible
for organizing and developing neighborhood crime watches, providing confidential
business and residential security surveys, hosting tours involving civic groups,
professional, educational and youth organizations. The crime Prevention
Unit also provides a myriad of programs aimed at reducing criminal opportunity
involving the citizens of our community. These include, but are not
limited to, children and adult safety programs, robbery prevention, sexual
assault prevention, as well as gang and drug prevention/awareness
programs. In addition, the Crime Prevention Unit is responsible for
hosting the highly successful Citizens Police Academy (CPA). The CPA
course is composed of a ten-week curriculum presented to community business
leaders and residents in four separate sessions during the course of the
year. The focus of the CPA is to provide the attendees with a basic
understanding of how the various operational components of the Police Department
are comprised and function.
The Training Unit is responsible for:
Developing and maintaining a comprehensive program of professional
and technical training for members of the Department by conducting classes and promoting
training opportunities outside the Department;
Conducting a comprehensive basic training program for police
recruits;
Ensuring departmental compliance with the Rules and Regulations of
the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training; and
Maintaining a firearms training and qualifications program, weapons
inspection, and issuance of uniforms and equipment.
The Crime Prevention Unit is responsible for:
Initiation, development and management of the
Neighborhood Watch Program.
Administering the security survey program that
inspects requested business and residents provides confidential
recommendations, which if compiled with should reduce the criminal
opportunity and increase the physical security of the structure.
Providing the public with a diverse amount of programs
aimed at reducing the citizen's risk at being the victim of criminal
activity.
Visit the Neighborhood Alert Centers (NAC) and provide
current information to the NAC facilitator, while serving as a vital link in
the team concept involving COPP, Code Enforcement and other essential city
services.
Administering the Citizens Police Academy.
The Police Personnel Unit is responsible for:
Recruitment of Officer applicants and Police Cadets;
Assisting the City Personnel Department with applicant interviews
and testing; and
Performing background investigations of police applicants.
