The Detective Division is organized into two areas of control: Crimes Against Persons (Homicide, Robbery, and Juvenile and Family) and Property Crimes (Burglary, Financial Crimes and Auto Theft). The detectives assigned to each of these specialized units are responsible for performing follow-up investigations for reported criminal acts, including interviewing witnesses and suspects, conducting line­ups, charging and booking offenders, and preparing detailed case files for courtroom challenges.

The Detective Division is under the direction of a Captain who reports to the Assistant Chief of Police - Police Special Services Bureau.

The Detective Division is responsible for:

  1. The follow-up investigation of Part I offenses;
  2. Conducting the follow-up investigation of other serious offenses; and
  3. Communicating with other law enforcement agencies to exchange information pertinent to criminal activity.
