JOB TITLE: Golf Course Superintendent

JOB
OBJECTIVE: To plan, direct and schedule the activities
of golf course maintenance crews in maintaining courses and constructing improvements
to golf courses to enhance playing conditions.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general direction from the Parks Enterprises
Manager.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Plans
maintenance and project work; schedules and assigns work activities and reviews
the work of golf course maintenance crews at each of the golf courses; selects,
trains, and provides necessary disciplinary action for assigned personnel.
2. Reviews
the work of work crews and independent contractors performing golf course
construction, renovation, and reconstruction to ensure work is completed
according to specifications.
3. Prepares
annual schedule for fertilizer application and overseeding of golf courses,
specifying types of plant material and fertilizers to be used and rate of
application.
4. Prepares
bid specifications for chemical purchases.
5. Verifies
invoices with purchases and proper budget account charges; forwards completed
invoices for payment.
6. Ensures
that golf course facilities (i.e., bathrooms, pavilions, shelters) are clean
and in working order.
7. Ensures
inventory control procedures are followed.
8. Monitors
expenditures to ensure the availability of funds; ensure expenditures are
within established guidelines.
9. Assigns
equipment to golf courses to accomplish work objectives.
10. Operates
a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Updates
list of chemicals to be used on golf courses; performs analysis to determine
most cost-effective chemicals.

2. Schedules
major projects to avoid simultaneous closing of two or more sections of golf
courses.
3. Recommends
purchases, replacements, and major repairs for golf course equipment.
4. Maintains
and updates the golf course manual and catalog of special golf course equipment
and chemicals; maintains inventory of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and
fungicides.
5. Supervises
the Department's Waterfowl Observation Program by locating and purchasing
waterfowl for park and golf course lakes and ponds and ensuring their safety
and well-being.
6. Maintains
records of daily maintenance activities, equipment maintenance schedule and
daily temperature for each golf course.
7. Prepares
annual budget figures with justification for major changes and purchases.
8. Prepares
material and equipment specifications for green, tee and fairway renovation on
golf courses.
9. Designs
and supervises installation of sprinkler systems on golf courses.
10. Serves
as liaison to golf course advisory committees.
11. Provides
information to the public and Department employees regarding golf course
activities; investigates complaints and initiates corrective action.
12. Reviews
equipment maintenance schedules and procedures to ensure that equipment is
properly maintained.
13. Performs
other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides immediate
supervision to Foremen I (Golf Course) and assigned crews.

REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable
knowledge
of the properties and use of chemical agents, including fertilizers,
fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, and growth control agents.
Considerable
knowledge
of the environmental requirements of various types of grasses, shrubs and
trees.
Considerable
knowledge
of plant diseases and destructive insects.
Considerable
knowledge
of the methods and techniques of turf establishment, including seeding and
sodding, and standard turf management practices.

of sprinkler and small irrigation systems.
Good
knowledge
of the methods and techniques of land contouring and drainage systems
development, including the use of sight levels, French drains, swales, and

course maintenance equipment.
Skill in the operation of an
automatic transmission automobile.
Skill in the operation of a
microcomputer.
Ability to keep records.
Ability to direct the work
activities and monitor the performance of assigned personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively,
both orally and in writing.
ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of
a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Agriculture, or a related
field; at least two (2) years of experience in golf course maintenance,
turf management, landscape design, or a related field; at least one (1) year
of supervisory experience; OR any
equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required
knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess
Arkansas State Plant Board Commercial Applicator License, Category 6,
Ornamental Weed Control, within six (6) months of employment and maintain
licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
Must possess
a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before
employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this
position.
