JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

JOB TITLE:  Firefighter (Firefighting)

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  November 1993

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To protect the lives and property of citizens of Little Rock by responding to calls for firefighting or emergency rescue assistance.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives immediate supervision from a Fire Captain.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Responds to fire and emergency rescue alarms by riding the assigned emergency vehicle to the scene.

 

2.         Connects hose to hydrant and nozzle; straightens hose as required and directs stream of water as instructed.

 

3.         Operates and climbs ladders to reach the roof or upper stories of buildings.

 

4.         Operates power saw to cut ventilation holes in the roof of burning buildings.

 

5.         Removes flammable and/or hazardous materials from the fire's scene.

 

6.         Moves or assists in moving persons from the fire or accident scene; administers first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to injured individuals.

 

7.         Enters burning structures as required to extinguish the fire and to remove occupants or hazardous materials.

 

8.         Rolls hose and loads hose and other firefighting equipment on to truck after fire is extinguished.

 

9.         Cleans and performs preventative maintenance on hose, tools and equipment after each alarm; refuels power equipment and recharges any fire extinguishers used.

 

10.       Reviews conditions of air packs, pumps and tools daily; recharges, repairs, or replaces equipment as required.

 

11.       Positions equipment and uniforms in the proper location for use.

 

12.       Performs various housekeeping duties at assigned fire station; cuts grass around fire station.

 

13.       Washes, waxes and refuels fire equipment vehicles.

 

14.       Inspects buildings as assigned to locate potential firefighting hazards and to obtain other related information.

15.       Attends various classes to obtain information regarding firefighting methods, standards, first aid and related subjects.

 

16.       Prepares incident reports for each alarm; operates computer terminal to enter incident reports and related information.

 

17.       Serves as tour guide to groups touring a fire station or makes presentations to school or civic groups as assigned.

 

18.       Serves as backup to the Firefighter/Driver by operating fire apparatus as assigned.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Performs other related duties as required.

Familiarity with basic mechanical principles.

 

Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.

Completion of high school; OR any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

***The following additional requirements are those which are required for all assignments in this classification.***

 

Must obtain certification as a basic emergency medical technician (EMT) from the Arkansas Department of Health within six (6) months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
