JOB OBJECTIVE:  Constructs, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on equipment, buildings, and structures at the City of Little Rock Zoo.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Performs carpentry work to cut, shape, assemble, install, and repair building components, including doors, cabinets, wall finishing, and furniture.

 

2.         Installs, repairs, and replaces roofing, floor covering, and laminated cabinet covering; prepares surfaces and applies plaster, paint, and other protective coverings.

 

3.         Performs masonry work to install and repair brick, rock, and block walls.

 

4.         Constructs and anchors forms for concrete work; mixes and pours concrete for projects; smoothes and levels concrete surfaces.

 

5.         Operates welding equipment to assemble metal components of buildings, benches, and other Zoo equipment.

 

6.         Operates small backhoe and small front-end loader to move and load materials; operates a one-ton truck to transport and unload supplies equipment, and materials.

 

7.         Works with the electrician on outside wiring projects, troubleshooting faulty electrical wires and other service work.

 

8.         Repairs and replaces water faucets, sprinkler system valves, and other plumbing components.

 

9.         Performs preventative maintenance on heating and cooling systems and other fixtures by replacing filters, cleaning thermostats, oiling fans, and motors, and replacing switches and light bulbs.

 

10.       Provides working supervision to Zoo Construction Worker I, Zoo Maintenance Worker, part-time employees, trustees, and volunteers on a project basis.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Visits work sites and reviews work orders and sketches to estimate the amount of material needed for assigned projects; obtains bids for estimated materials and notifies supervisor of needed materials.

 

2.         Purchases material and submits purchase orders.

 

3.         Operates power tools to cut and assemble telephone poles and other wooden components for animal climbing structures.

 

4.         Cleans, adjusts, and changes worn and malfunctioning parts on hand and power tools.

 

5.         Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques.

 

Knowledge of masonry methods and techniques.

 

Knowledge of the procedures involved in mixing concrete.

 

Knowledge of the methods and procedures employed in concrete pouring and finishing.

 

Knowledge of welding methods and techniques.

 

Familiarity with the equipment and tools employed in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and sprinkler systems.

 

Familiarity with the basic methods and procedures of simple electrical component installation and replacement.

 

Skill in the operation of acetylene and arc welding equipment.

 

Skill in the operation of a variety of maintenance, power, hand and metal working tools and equipment.

 

Skill in the operation of a small backhoe and small front-end loader.

 

Skill in the operation of a one-ton truck.

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school,  two (2) years of experience in building construction work of a semi-skilled nature,  one (1) year of semi-skilled welding experience,  one (1) year of supervisory or lead worker experience.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
