JOB TITLE:  Welder

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  April 1999

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform various types of welding to repair and maintain City owned property.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives immediate supervision from the Service Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Operates acetylene (gas) and arc (electric) welding and plasma cutting equipment to remove, repair or replace worn or damaged components of City property.

 

2.         Estimates the amount of time and materials required for each project.

 

3.         Designs needed parts by reviewing descriptions, dimensions, and rough drawings of the damaged part and its function.

 

4.         Operates saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate parts needed to repair a piece of equipment.

 

5.         Repairs and hard surfaces grader blades and teeth on backhoe buckets, asphalt grinder and other excavation and earth moving equipment; remounts repaired and reconditioned blades.

 

6.         Operates vehicles or equipment to move them into or out of the repair area and to test repaired equipment.

 

7.         Inspects and makes minor repairs to welding equipment; notifies supervisor of parts needed to complete repair.

 

8.         Picks up needed materials and supplies from proper supplier.

 

9.         Lists the amount of time, material and supplies used for a repair or construction project on the work order per project.

 

10.       Assists mechanics in minor repairs.

 

11.       Operates and maintains the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Machine Inert Gas (MIG) welding equipment to repair equipment and fabricate parts.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of the practices and materials of the welding trade.

 

Good knowledge of the physical characteristics of various types of metals used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

 

Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various types of heavy equipment and other mechanical devices.

 

Skill in the operation of acetylene and arc welding equipment.

Skill in the use of hand tools and metal working power equipment.

 

Ability to understand written and oral instructions.

 

Ability to determine dimensional and material specifications and estimate costs for repair parts from blueprints, rough sketches, repair manuals, and other instructions.

 

Ability to communicate effectively with other vehicle maintenance personnel, equipment operators, and supervisors from other City departments.

 

Ability to keep simple records of time and material used for each repair project.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of grade school; at least two (2) years of experience as a maintenance welder; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: 

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
