JOB TITLE:  Traffic Technician II (Operations)

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  June 1996

 

ORG/POS #:  2360/2226

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To provide technical assistance to the Traffic Engineering Division in the gathering of traffic data and the preparation of various reports.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Traffic Operations Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Collects traffic data concerning traffic volume, speed, parking space use, and roadway measurement by use of various traffic equipment.

 

2.         Prepares graphs, charts and diagrams of signs, pavement markings or collision paths as necessary.

 

3.         Analyzes traffic data and presents suggestions for changes, ensuring compliance with standard traffic control procedures and City Ordinances.

 

4.         Performs layout of pavement markings for use by striping crews.

 

5.         Investigates routine citizen complaints, such as obstruction to vision at intersections, or other traffic problems.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Provides assistance in sketching barricade plans for contractors, utility companies, and other members of the public; submits plans for approval.

 

2.         Performs field investigations of barricades at construction sites to ensure compliance with City ordinances and safety regulations.

 

3.         Performs routine maintenance including the replacement of parts on traffic data gathering devices.

 

4.         Conducts routine surveys by telephone or by mail to obtain data relative to traffic practices in other cities.

 

5.         Provides traffic data acquisition equipment training as required.

 

6.         Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides general supervision to Traffic Technician I while performing field operations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Good knowledge of the uniform standards and installation of traffic control devices.

 

Good knowledge of drafting methods and techniques.

 

Some knowledge of basic engineering mathematics, including algebra.

 

Some knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic engineering.

 

Skill in the operation of a microcomputer, utilizing spreadsheet, data base, word processing, and traffic engineering software.

Skill in the operation of traffic data gathering devices, such as a radar gun and traffic volume and turning movement counter devices.

 

Skill in the operation of drafting equipment.

 

Ability to gather, analyze, and report traffic data.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to read and interpret the Uniform Standards for Traffic Control Devices.

 

Ability to maintain detailed files and records.

 

Ability to prepare technical reports.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Completion of high school; at least two years of experience at the level of Traffic Technician I, or a related area; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class "D" vehicle operator's license.
