JOB TITLE: Traffic Systems Specialist
MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE: April 1999

JOB
OBJECTIVE: To operate and maintain the traffic control
computer systems and to analyze traffic control data.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Traffic Systems
Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Operates
the traffic control computer to ensure proper functioning of traffic signals
and related equipment.
2. Monitors
the traffic signal system light changes to ensure proper operation; notifies
maintenance personnel of failures; monitors the repair process.
3. Modifies
traffic control computer programs to obtain specific data or to change signal
control as outlined by the Traffic Systems Manager.
4. Codes
and inputs intersection conditions (i.e., the number of lanes, parking,
location of detectors, etc.) into the computer terminal.
5. Maintains
records of programming changes made to field controllers.
6. Computes
time settings for signals of isolated intersections; conducts field inspections
on signal lights to ensure timing patterns are appropriate.
7. Reviews
traffic data collected from field detectors and other sources regarding traffic
flow, volume, signal timing, intersection capacity, vehicle delay, traffic
accidents, etc.
8. Reviews
and approves the modification plans for traffic signal equipment hardware and
traffic signal control cabinet re-wire plans.
9. Develops
and conducts training in the operations and maintenance of the traffic system
signal equipment for Signal Repair Technicians.
10. Operates
a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Modifies
data analysis computer programs for traffic studies.
2. Determines
and implements corrective action for intersections and corridors experiencing
traffic flow problems; submits major changes to the Traffic Systems Manager for
approval prior to implementation.
3. Designs
computer graphics for monitoring and analyzing real-time traffic signal
operation.

4. Answers
questions and provides technical information to citizens regarding traffic
signals.
5. Ensures
the maintenance of the database for equipment repairs and related hard copy
filing systems.
6. Prepares
requisitions and provides technical information for the preparation of
specifications for equipment and supplies.
7. Performs
other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides general
supervision to a Signal Repair Technician – Senior.

of basic electronics.

activities and monitor the performance of assigned employees.
Ability to prepare purchase
requisitions.

Ability to communicate effectively,
both orally and in writing.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND
TRAINING:
Completion of
at least two (2) years of college or vocational technical school course
work in Electronics or a related area; at least two (2) years of experience
in data analysis or a related area; at least one (1) year of experience
in microcomputer use; at least one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience
and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Must possess
a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before
employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this
position.
