JOB TITLE:  Traffic Accident Investigator

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  January 1996

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  Responds to vehicle accident scenes and gathers and records the necessary information.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Sergeant (Patrol).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Responds to reported traffic accidents; completes Arkansas Motor Vehicle Traffic Reports, as needed and completes appropriate Little Rock Police Department information reports as needed for accidents occurring on private property.

 

2.         Obtains equipment (vehicle, portable radio etc.) and ensures employee number as well as equipment identification number are properly entered into the Police Department computer system.

 

3.         Patrols assigned area and reports potential traffic hazards to appropriate City departments for corrective action.

 

4.         Upon responding to accident scene, ensures the accident scene and related evidence are secured; records information received from drivers and witnesses for inclusion in required reports; directs traffic as necessary.

 

5.         Testifies in court regarding traffic and/or parking citations.

 

6.         Answers questions and provides information to citizens regarding traffic laws and regulations.

 

7.         Attends a daily line-up meeting to receive assignment and information from supervisors regarding areas needing special attention due to parking violators, changes in policy, etc.

 

8.         Provides information exchange forms to each driver involved in a traffic accident investigated by the Traffic Accident Investigator.

 

9.         Responds to calls as needed to assist Police Officers.

 

10.       Performs other related duties as required.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs work of moderate difficulty in patrolling assigned areas of Little Rock and responding to accident scenes.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Good knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices.

 

Good knowledge of applicable state and local laws and ordinances.

 

Good knowledge of the geography of the City of Little Rock.

 

Good knowledge of the maintenance requirements for equipment including communications equipment and vehicles.

 

Good knowledge of the general orders, rules and regulations and divisional operating procedures.

Ability to prepare accident reports, including detailed drawings of the accident location.

 

Ability to prepare detailed narrative reports.

 

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to interview persons to obtain information for reports.

 

Ability to testify in court.

 

Ability to read and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

 

Skill in the operation of two-way communications equipment.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of high school; two (2) years of experience involving investigation, inspection, interviewing, including recording and reporting of data; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arkansas Class "D" vehicle operator's license before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
