JOB OBJECTIVE: To operate a refuse collection truck and a cart dumper mechanism in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the collection of solid waste materials on an assigned route.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Operates a heavy-duty refuse collection truck following an assigned collection route; maneuvers truck to proper dumping site at the City landfill.
2. Removes refuse from residential sites using a cart dumper mechanism and lifts and empties contents of excess trash containers into a sanitation truck, when assigned to a cart collection route.
3. Checks fuel, oil, fluid levels, tires and other wear‑prone parts of assigned truck daily before beginning operations; notifies Foreman I and the Fleet Maintenance Shop of needed maintenance and repairs.
4. Washes assigned truck and cleans the interior weekly or as needed.
5. Follows designated safety practices to ensure the safety of assigned crew members, equipment and private property.
6. Directs the work activities of a refuse collection crew, when assigned to a non-automated collection route.
7. Notifies the Foreman I or the Route Coordinator by two‑way radio of any problems, including violations of refuse collection regulations, equipment malfunctions, accidents and injured crew members.
8. Operates special heavy-duty trucks.
9. Provides direct working supervision to one or two Refuse Collectors when assigned to a non-automated collection route.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Answers questions or provides information to citizens on assigned route.
2. Performs other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of safety procedures and defensive driving techniques.
Skill in the operation of a heavy-duty vehicle.
Skill in the operation of an automatic transmission automobile.
Skill in the operation of a cart dumper mechanism.
Ability to follow oral and simple written instructions.
Ability to maintain simple records.
Ability to lift and carry weights up to 60 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively.
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through the completion of grade school, one (1) year of experience in the operation of a heavy-duty transport vehicle, and one (1) year of experience at the level of Solid Waste Equipment Operator I. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for duration of employment in this position.
Employees in this classification must possess a safe driving record, including no accidents caused by negligent operation of a vehicle.
