JOB TITLE:  Signal Technician II

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  April 1997

 

ORG/POS #:  2260/1019

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To install solid state electronic traffic devices and to replace defective traffic signals at various Little Rock street locations.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the General Foreman (Signal).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Installs pretimed fully automatic solid state electronic controllers and traffic signals by making wire connections as designated on the signal blueprint.

 

2.         Operates hand tools and light equipment to dig holes for signal pole bases, or to remove existing poles; pours and finishes concrete to build bases for traffic signal poles.

 

3.         Hangs mast arms on signal poles and attaches traffic signals; connects cables and wires to the control cabinet and pole; drives an aerial bucket, stake, bed, and/or line truck..

 

4.         Replaces traffic bulbs and defective parts at intersections when malfunction can be located; returns defective parts to signal shop for repair.

 

5.         Digs trenches, pulls wires and splices as necessary for the installation of conduits.

 

6.         Attends seminars and meetings to obtain information of new installation techniques.

 

7.         Supervises the activities of an assigned crew of Signal Technicians; trains new Signal Technicians.

 

8.         Testifies in court to explain the functioning of signals.

 

9.         Completes a daily report of time worked, equipment hours, nature of job, and other related information.

 

10.       Prepares a record card describing symptoms of signal malfunctions for each piece of equipment returned from the field for repair.

 

11.       Utilizes a computer terminal to monitor the status of closed loop traffic controllers for computer controlled intersections.

 

12.       Receives calls from Central Communications, other City employees and members of the public identifying malfunctioning signals.

 

13.       Serves as backup in the absence of the General Foreman.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and principles governing electrical and electronic installation.

 

Considerable knowledge of the standard tools and materials used in the installation of electrical and electronic devices.

Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the installation of electrical and electronic devices.

 

Skill in the operation of a two-ton manual transmission truck.

 

Skill in the operation of a computer terminal.

 

Skill in the operation of a vehicle with air brakes.

 

Ability to supervise and train the activities of a crew of skilled workers.

 

Ability to interpret technical schedules and blueprints.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of high school or vocational school, including training in basic electrical wiring; at least two (2) years of experience in the installation of electrical and electronic devices; at least one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
