JOB TITLE:  Signal Repair Technician

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  March 1996

 

ORG/POS #:  2260, 2360/2087, 1159

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To troubleshoot, repair, and maintain defective signal control units and other assigned equipment.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the General Foreman and Signal Repair Technician - Senior.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Utilizes test meters and various electronic test equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in electronic control devices.

 

2.         Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on microcomputer remote control devices, connection lines, transmitters and receivers.

 

3.         Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on assigned electronic equipment, such as the asphalt plant, street grinder, and street marking machinery.

 

4.         Performs diagnostic tests on repaired control devices to ensure functioning, according to engineering specifications and computer programming, before and after placement in the field.

 

5.         Constructs electronic test equipment to test specific components and functions of electronic controllers and computer communications equipment.

 

6.         Tests new electronic equipment to ensure specifications are met and compatibility with existing computer programs and communications equipment.

 

7.         Prepares blueprints and schematic diagrams of new test equipment and circuit changes in electronic control devices.

 

8.         Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions in the field in the absence of Signal Technicians and when unusual problems are encountered.

 

9.         Completes a daily log of equipment received for repairs, and work completed.

 

10.       Operates a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Reviews proposed changes in signal configuration for specific intersections to ensure that control devices and controller logic are compatible with the change; modifies and reprograms controllers to accommodate engineering changes.

2.         Assists in maintaining an inventory of electronic components and replacement parts; purchases and requisitions needed supplies and components.

 

3.         Researches technical materials and supply catalogs; contacts manufacturer's representatives to locate compatible replacements for obsolete components.

 

4.         Assists in maintaining a file of blueprints and schematic diagrams of electronic equipment located at each intersection.

 

5.         Assists in maintaining a computer inventory listing of electronic control devices, showing the type and location of each device; notifies the Engineering Division of changes in equipment location.

 

6.         Provides training and technical information to other Signal Division employees, regarding new electronic equipment and special procedures.

 

7.         Provides technical information regarding test equipment and materials needed for use in preparation of tentative budget figures.

 

8.         Assists in maintaining a library of technical manuals for electronic control devices in service.

 

9.         Receives calls from members of the public, related to signal malfunctions.

 

10.       Performs other related duties as required.

Comprehensive knowledge of basic electronics.

 

Considerable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of microprocessors and computer communications equipment.

 

Considerable knowledge of the terminology and nomenclature of basic electronics.

 

Skill in the operation of a microcomputer.

 

Skill in the operation of light hand tools and electronic test equipment.

Ability to read, interpret, and prepare blueprints and schematic diagrams.

 

Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with Signal Technicians, employees of other City departments, parts suppliers, and members of the public.

 

Ability to maintain complex records.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Completion of a vocational - technical school course in basic electronics; at least two (2) years experience in the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment, including microprocessors; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:  Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
