JOB OBJECTIVE:  To assist in the operation of a City recreation center; to provide coaching, instruction, supervision, and counseling to participants in activities in a City recreation center.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Plans and organizes athletic and other recreational activities and programs for youth and/or adult participants.

 

2.         Issues equipment and supplies to participants and/or groups renting the center.

 

3.         Collects fees for various activities and programs and ID cards; collects fees for groups renting the center and/or center equipment; issues receipts; makes deposits.

 

4.         Drives center van with youth participants to sites away from the center.

 

5.         Coaches and officiates youth and/or adult teams in various athletic activities and programs.

 

6.         Administers minor discipline, following center policy, to center participants as required, including verbal reprimands, time-out periods, and conferences with parents; completes appropriate paperwork; recommends suspensions to supervisor.

 

7.         Serves as backup to supervisor by directing activities and programs of the center.

 

8.         Monitors equipment condition and maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

 

9.         Performs daily and/or routine maintenance and repairs of center facilities and equipment, such as disinfecting exercise equipment and mopping spills.

 

10.       Assigns and directs activities and monitors performance of assigned center regular part-time, temporary, contract, and volunteer staff.

 

11.       Monitors behavior of center participants and visitors to ensure that center rules, City ordinances and other policies, procedures, and laws are obeyed.

 

12.       Teaches or assists in teaching various special interest classes, such as arts and crafts, and athletic and other recreational activities, such as aerobics.

 

13.       Completes daily reports of information used for center monthly report:  activities and programs, numbers and ages of participants and money collected.

 

14.       Administers basic first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to injured individuals; telephones emergency personnel for individuals requiring medical attention; completes appropriate paperwork.

 

15.       Performs major and/or annual maintenance and repairs of center facilities and equipment, such as waxing gym floor.

 

17.       Recommends additions, changes, continuation, or deletion of existing activities and programs.

 

18.       Provides counseling to center participants on a limited basis.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Recommends purchase of new equipment and supplies.

 

2.         Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  none.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of rules and techniques of athletic and other recreational activities for youth and adult groups.

 

Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid procedures and techniques.

 

Knowledge of a variety of arts and crafts.

 

Skill in the operation of an automatic transmission automobile.

 

Ability to supervise, coach, and officiate participants in various athletic and recreational activities.

 

Ability to instruct and explain various athletic and recreational activity principles and rules.

 

Ability to compute the cost of fees and other charges and to collect money.

 

Ability to complete forms.

 

Ability to maintain simple records.

 

Ability to direct the activities of assigned personnel.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through the completion of high school and one (1) year of experience assisting with the direction of athletic or recreational programs, or a related area.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess Standard First Aid and Community CPR certifications, or other certifications which incorporate Standard First Aid and Infant, Child and Adult CPR, within six (6) months of employment, and maintain certifications for the duration of employment in this position.
