JOB TITLE: Probation Officer (Traffic Court)

JOB
OBJECTIVE: To design and monitor corrective action
plans and programs for Traffic Court probationers.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general direction from the Probation Officer -
Senior (Traffic Court).
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Interviews
defendants, their families and friends and conducts background investigations
to determine the types of sentences and to create corrective action plans.
2. Recommends
probation, community service and/or rehabilitation to the Judge at the
defendant's sentencing hearing; contacts local schools, shelters, or places of
employment, and other resources to assist probationers with their rehabilitation,
community service, and corrective action plans.
3. Meets
with probationers to monitor their progress and to counsel them regarding drug
and alcohol abuse or financial and other personal matters; supervises
defendants released from jail on lowered bonds due to overcrowding.
4. Completes
necessary probation revocation paperwork for individuals who violate the terms
of their probation; testifies in court as required.
5. Identifies
defendants with drug abuse problems; recommends and performs random drug
screening tests.
6. Prepares
and maintains confidential files, records, and legal documents; expunges
records of defendants who successfully complete their probation.
7. Operates
a computer terminal to check local, state, and federal traffic records of
defendants; enters unsupervised probation records into the computer and
prepares revocations.
8. Delivers
speeches to schools and community organizations concerning the traffic justice
system and alcohol and drug abuse programs in the court; provides information
to the general public regarding court programs and services; explains court
policies and procedures to defendants, attorneys, witnesses, and public.
9. Responds
to citizen complaints regarding Traffic Court probation procedures; refers
complex complaints to the Probation Officer - Senior.
10. Serves
on special state and local councils regarding the probation system.

11. Provides
caseload information and purchasing requests to the Probation Officer- Senior
to assist in the preparation of the probation annual budget; prepares monthly
probation reports.
12. Serves
as Bailiff.
13. Provides
technical assistance relating to the set up of video and audio equipment for
the Campus Court – Critical Choices program.
14. Provides
security for the courtroom.
15. Processes
prisoners for Pulaski County Detention Center.

other related duties as required.
