JOB TITLE: Probation Officer (Traffic Court - Community Service)

OBJECTIVE: To design and monitor corrective action
plans and programs for Traffic Court probationers.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general direction from the Judge (Traffic Court).
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Interviews
defendants, their families and friends and conducts background investigations
to determine the types of sentences and to create corrective action plans.
2. Recommends
probation, community service and/or rehabilitation to the Judge at the
defendant's sentencing hearing; contacts local schools, shelters, or places of
employment, and other resources to assist probationers with their
rehabilitation, community service, and corrective action plans.
3. Meets
with probationers to monitor their progress and to counsel them regarding drug
and alcohol abuse or financial and other personal matters.
4. Completes
necessary probation revocation paperwork for individuals who violate the terms
of their probation; testifies in court as required.
5. Identifies
defendants with drug abuse problems; recommends and performs random drug
screening tests.
6. Prepares
and maintains confidential files, records, and legal documents of defendants
who successfully complete their probation.
7. Operates
a computer terminal to check local, state, and federal criminal records of
defendants.
8. Delivers
speeches to schools and community organizations concerning the criminal justice
system and alcohol and drug abuse programs in the court; provides information
to the general public regarding court programs and services.
9. Responds
to citizen complaints regarding Traffic Court probation procedures; refers
complex complaints to the Probation Officer - Senior.
10. Serves
on special state and local councils regarding the probation system.
11. Provides
caseload information and purchasing requests to the Probation Officer - Senior
to assist in the preparation of the Probation annual budget.
12. Serves
as Bailiff upon request of the Judge.

13. Prepares
and maintains confidential files on juveniles who are assigned to attend
defensive driving school.
14. Maintains
attendance list for driving school instructor; monitors attendance and
schedules alternate dates for students unable to attend classes due to illness
or school functions.
15. Compiles
and submits paperwork to the judge or juveniles who were absent on their
assigned driving school date without prior approval from the Probation
Department.
17. Performs
other related duties as required.
