Probation Officer (Environmental Court)

JOB OBJECTIVE:
To design and monitor corrective action plans and programs for
Environmental Court probationers.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Receives general supervision from the Probation Officer - Senior
(Environmental Division).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Interviews defendants, their families,
and friends and conducts background investigations to determine the types of
sentences and to create corrective action plans.
2. Recommends fines, probation, community
service and/or rehabilitation to the Judge at the defendant's sentencing
hearing; contacts local schools, shelters, or places of employment, and other
resources to assist probationers with their rehabilitation, community service,
and corrective action plans.
3. Meets with probationers to suggest ways
to bring property up to code; counsels probationers regarding financial and
other personal matters and monitors progress.
4. Completes necessary probation
revocation paperwork for individuals who violate the terms of their probation;
testifies in court as required.
5. Prepares and maintains confidential
files, records, and legal documents; expunges records of defendants who successfully
complete their probation.
6. Delivers speeches to schools and
community organizations concerning the Environmental Court system; provides
information to the general public regarding court programs and services.
7. Responds to citizen complaints regarding
Environmental Court probation procedures.
8. Provides case load information and
purchasing requests to the Judge to assist in the preparation of the probation
annual budget.
9. Serves as bailiff upon request of the
Judge.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Operates a computer terminal to check
local, state, and federal criminal records of defendants.
2. Serves on special state and local
councils regarding the probation system.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of the guidelines governing the Criminal
Justice probation system.
Good knowledge of courtroom procedures and practices.
Good knowledge of counseling methods and techniques.
Good knowledge of probation revocation procedures.
Skill in the operation of a computer terminal.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE
AND TRAINING:
Completion of a college
degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field; at
least one (1) year of experience in probation, counseling, or a related
area; OR any equivalent combination of
experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess or be
able to obtain within one year of employment, certification as Specialized
Police Personnel.
Must possess a valid
Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment
and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
