JOB TITLE:  Police Sergeant (Planning and Research)

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform a variety of tasks in the supervision of Police Officers and civilian personnel under command within an assigned unit.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Lieutenant (Administrative Services).

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.   Conducts surveys of other police departments and researches applicable laws, policies, and other sources; compiles statistics and writes drafts of policies, procedures and reports based on research.

 

2.   Completes revision of policy and procedure drafts; ensures dissemination of approved orders.

 

3.   Supervises and assists the Crime Analysis Unit in the collection, analysis, and reporting of data and statistics.

 

4.   Maintains department files and records, including Police personnel, crime analysis projects, policies, procedures, and other required records and correspondence.

 

5.   Writes routine correspondence in response to requests for crime statistics and other material from the public, other Police Department Divisions and outside agencies.

 

6.   Supervises, evaluates and completes required reports on assigned Interns, Graduate students, and Crime Analysis personnel.

 

7.   Testifies in court regarding past and present department policies.

 

8.   Ensures development of computer program systems to prepare reports, drafts, and maps for presentation to management concerning crime trends and recommendations for corrective action.

 

9.   Enters and retrieves police data reports and projects on personal computer and mainframe computer; uses spreadsheets, word processing, and data base programs to develop reports.

10.  Reviews reports submitted by subordinate personnel relating to information gathered and investigations conducted; assigns work area and duties to officers and personnel.

 

11.  Maintains records of time worked by each subordinate and approves requests for vacation, compensatory or discretionary time.

 

12.  Prepares regular reports on activities performed by assigned unit.

 

13.  Provides training for new officers assigned to squad.

 

14.  Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides general direction to the Crime Analyst and general supervision to a Police Officer.
