JOB TITLE: Police Sergeant (Homicide)

OBJECTIVE: To assign and supervise all homicide
investigations and the maintenance of related files and records.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Police Lieutenant
(Detective Division).
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Receives
and distributes all cases (i.e., homicide, rape, assault and battery,
kidnapping, and missing persons) to assigned Police Officers.
2. Supervises
the daily work activities of assigned Police Officers and provides assistance
and guidance as required.
3. Reviews
and approves reports, correspondence, and case files prepared by assigned
Police Officers to ensure they are accurate and complete.
4. Reviews
all search and seizure applications prepared by assigned Officers to ensure
compliance with laws, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
5. Plans
and directs the execution of all search and seizure warrants obtained by
assigned Officers.
6. Approves
and monitors the arrest of suspects and the completion of related forms,
ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and departmental policies and
procedures.
7. Testifies
in court as required.
8. Informs
assigned Officers of changes in Departmental or Divisional policies and
procedures or changes in laws and regulations; ensures that Officers comply
with changes.
9. Prepares
monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual narrative and statistical reports;
conducts research and prepares special reports as required.
10. Inspects
the equipment assigned to the squad to ensure it remains functional and in good
repair.
11. Evaluates
the performance of assigned Officers; recommends disciplinary action when
required.
12. Approves
and schedules leave time for assigned Officers, ensuring adequate coverage of
duties and responsibilities.

13. Investigates
and responds to service complaints lodged against assigned Officers.
14. Reports
to the scenes of major crimes to ensure all procedures are followed.
15. Supervises
suspect lineups and the interviewing of some witnesses, victims and/or
suspects.
16. Performs
other related duties as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides general
supervision to assigned Police Officers.
