JOB TITLE:  Police Sergeant (Crime Prevention)

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To supervise Police Officers assigned to the D.A.R.E. Program, the Crime Prevention Unit, and those serving as School Resource Officers.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Lieutenant (Training and Crime Prevention).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Supervises the daily work activities of assigned Police Officers and civilian personnel and provides assistance and guidance as required.

 

2.         Informs assigned Officers of crime prevention and other training requests received from civic groups, schools, business owners, etc.; ensures training is scheduled and conducted.

 

3.         Ensures the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program is taught at participating schools; reviews and approves training schedules submitted by assigned Officers.

 

4.         Supervises Officers responsible for coordinating various citizen participation programs, such as the Citizens Police Academy and Civilian Volunteers In Police Service; ensures policies and procedures are followed.

 

5.         Supervises the recruitment of personnel to participate in the Cadet program; ensures background investigations are conducted on individuals participating in citizen and Cadet programs.

 

6.         Supervises Officers assigned to the Little Rock School District as Resource Officers to ensure required training is conducted according to established policies and procedures.

 

7.         Prepares and presents crime prevention, citizen participation and school training programs as required.

 

8.         Ensures trustys assigned to the Training facility complete their assignments; oversees all building and grounds maintenance projects at the Training facility to ensure work is completed timely and accurately.

 

9.         Informs assigned Officers of changes in departmental or divisional policies and procedures or changes in laws and regulations; ensures that Officers comply with changes.

 

10.       Reviews and approves reports, correspondence, lesson plans, training schedules, and other documents prepared by assigned Officers to ensure they are accurate and complete.

11.       Testifies in court as required.

 

12.       Prepares monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual narrative and statistical reports; conducts research and prepares special reports as required.

 

13.       Evaluates the performance of assigned Officers and civilian personnel; recommends disciplinary action when required.

 

14.       Approves and schedules leave time for assigned personnel, ensuring adequate coverage of duties and responsibilities.

 

15.       Coordinates the establishment and staffing of a Police sub-station in the Highland Park housing community each summer; supervises the "Fun Festival" sponsored by the Police Department of the Highland Park residents.

 

16.       Teaches classes for in-service and recruit schools.

 

17.       Approves all requests from Cadets to participate in the "Ride Along" program.

 

18.       Performs other related duties as required.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Supervises the preparation and production of public service announcements regarding crime prevention and training programs offered by the Police Department.

 

2.         Inspects vehicles and equipment assigned to the Training Division to ensure they remain functional and in good repair.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides general supervision to Police Officers assigned to the D.A.R.E. Program, the Crime Prevention Unit, and those serving as School Resource Officers; provides general supervision to assigned Cadets and the Secretary (Training and Crime Prevention).
