JOB TITLE:  Police Sergeant (Communications)

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform a variety of tasks in the supervision of Police Officers under command, within an assigned squad.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Lieutenant for work assignments, review of work and all written reports.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.   Supervises the upkeep of maintenance of all Police Department vehicles ensuring all repair and maintenance work is done in an efficient and timely manner.

 

2.   Supervises the storing and security of all property and money kept within the Police Department.

 

3.   Performs periodic audits of stored property and money with Police Lieutenant to verify all recorded property with property log.

 

4.   Supervises the communication between the Office of Management Support and the Police Department concerning software needs.

 

5.   Supervises the Communication Section ensuring all information is properly and quickly received and transmitted; ensures proper records of communication are maintained.

 

6.   Completes work schedules authorizing vacation and discretionary time as requested; completes time sheets accordingly.

 

7.   Evaluates employees on personal appearance and work performance recommending disciplinary action as needed.

 

8.   Makes recommendations and performs research for new equipment purchase and placement.

 

9.   Conducts staff meetings to relay procedure and policy and other pertinent information.

 

10.  Clears unclaimed property by attempting to locate possible owners of property before sale at public auction.

11.  Answers complaints from public concerning missing property from impounded vehicles after reviewing report completed by officer concerning contents when impounded.

 

12.  Compiles periodic activity report totalling work performed with areas of responsibility.

 

13.  Orders supplies for divisions as needed through appropriate personnel.

 

14.  Interviews civilian personnel applicants for Communication Section when necessary and makes selection recommendations for hiring.

 

15.  Plans annual budget for supervises divisions for cost of new equipment, furniture and other major expenditures necessary for next year.

 

16.  Discusses any changing communications procedure with Patrol Captain to ensure feasibility and compatibility with patrol procedure.

 

17.  Serves as backup for Desk Sergeant, Court Bailiff or Records and Support Supervisor in case of absence.

 

18.  Practices on shooting range periodically to ensure the meeting of annual standards exam.

 

19.  Investigates complaints against personnel under supervision and recommends action to be taken.

 

20.  Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides general supervision to Police Officers, Cadets and Public Safety Dispatchers.
