JOB TITLE:  Police Sergeant (Airport)

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To supervise Officers assigned to patrol the Airport and surrounding grounds to ensure enforcement of laws and ordinances.    

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Lieutenant (Special Operations).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Supervises Officers assigned to patrol the Airport building and surrounding grounds in order to prevent criminal activity or to apprehend violators of laws and ordinances.

 

2.         Responds to calls and notifies appropriate authorities in case of fires, bomb threats, passengers requiring medical attention, etc.

 

3.         Ensures the evacuation of persons in the Airport in case of fires, bomb threats, or any other situation which could be potentially dangerous.

 

4.         Ensures the enforcement of parking meter and traffic rules and regulations on the Airport grounds.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Maintains radio communication with Officers patrolling the Airport building and surrounding grounds to ensure security coverage.

 

2.         Reviews and approves forms and reports completed by assigned Officers for each incident, including forms required by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Aviation Administration; maintains a master file of documents relating to all incidents occurring at the Airport.

 

3.         Testifies in court regarding incidents at the Airport as required.

 

4.         Informs assigned Officers of changes in Departmental or Divisional policies and procedures or changes in laws and regulations; ensures that Officers comply with changes.

 

5.         Prepares monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual narrative and statistical reports; conducts research and prepares special reports as required.

 

6.         Inspects the equipment assigned to the squad to ensure it remains functional and in good repair.

 

7.         Evaluates the performance of assigned Officers; recommends disciplinary action when required.

8.         Prepares work schedules for Officers assigned to the Airport; approves and schedules leave time for assigned Officers, ensuring adequate coverage of duties and responsibilities.

 

9.         Investigates and responds to service complaints lodged against assigned Officers.

 

10.       Answers questions and provides information to Airport patrons and employees regarding weather conditions, directions, and laws and regulations governing articles being carried on board flights.

 

11.       Meets with officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration and Airport Management to ensure adequate security is maintained at the Airport.

 

12.       Attends seminars and in-service training courses to keep informed of changes in laws and regulations or to learn additional information regarding hijackings, bomb threats, etc.

 

13.       Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides general supervision to assigned Police Officers.
