JOB TITLE:  Police Officer (Narcotics)

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform a variety of tasks involving the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Sergeant.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Creates and maintains confidential sources of information.

 

2.         Investigates reports of criminal activity related to narcotics received from informants, doctors or the general public.

 

3.         Completes memoranda for submission to supervisor relating all details when an informant reveals information concerning narcotics violations.

 

4.         Sets up purchases of narcotics by informants or, if possible, with officer.

 

5.         Searches informants prior to and immediately following a drug purchase.

 

6.         Transports informant to scene of purchase and witnesses the informant going to house, vehicle, etc.

 

7.         Searches for and preserves evidence related to narcotics violations or other crimes.

 

8.         Prepares a case file for each arrest, including a fact sheet, rights form, interview form, memoranda report, search warrant and affidavit, and chemist's report.

 

9.         Questions all suspects and witnesses concerning various crimes.

 

10.       Performs field tests on suspected narcotics to determine purity of drugs.

 

11.       Maintains a surveillance log of persons and places suspected of narcotics, recording date, time, person and place.

 

12.       Completes index card for each informant, listing the report numbers completed for that individual.

 

13.       Obtains suspected forged prescriptions from druggists, verifies with doctor and collects as much information as possible from druggist concerning the person who presented it.

 

14.       Testifies in court for cases in which the officer has been involved.

 

15.       Practices periodically on pistol range to meet annual standards exam.
