JOB TITLE: Police Officer (D.A.R.E. Program)

OBJECTIVE: To present Drug Abuse Resistance Education
(D.A.R.E.) training to school students; to participate in school and community
programs and events designed to build positive relationships between the
community and the Police Department.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Police Sergeant
(Crime Prevention).
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Receives
a list of schools that are scheduled to participate in Drug Abuse Resistance
Education (D.A.R.E.) training; prepares training schedules for each semester
and submits them to the Police Sergeant for review and approval.
2. Researches
information and prepares for presentations; writes lesson plans for each
presentation, utilizing the D.A.R.E. training manual.
3. Presents
programs to sixth grade students to teach them how to resist drugs, alcohol and
gangs by emphasizing good decision
making skills, providing accurate information about drugs and alcohol, showing
them how to resist peer pressure, and showing them alternatives to drug use and
gang membership.
4. Answers
questions and provides information to students regarding drug and alcohol
abuse, gangs, and other law enforcement issues.
5. Attends
school functions and extra-curricular activities to build positive
relationships with the students.
6. Attends
Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings to present programs to the parents
and to teach them techniques in talking with their children about drugs,
alcohol, and gangs.
7. Visits
local high schools to recruit drug and gang free students to be
"Mentors" to the sixth grade students participating in the D.A.R.E.
program; assists "Mentors" in making group presentations or speaking
individually to the younger students regarding drug, alcohol and gang
resistance.
8. Makes
presentations to local youth organizations, such as New Futures For Little Rock
Youth, regarding drug, alcohol and gang resistance.
9. Serves
on the staff of the police sub-station established in the Highland Park housing
community each summer; teaches an abbreviated edition of the D.A.R.E. program
to Highland Park residents.
10. Assists
in coordinating an annual "Fun Festival" in the Highland Park housing
community which consists of carnivals, games, dance contests, etc.

11. Participates
in fund raising events, such as basketball games, to raise money for the
D.A.R.E. program.
12. Serves
as backup to Police Officers assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit by
presenting crime prevention programs to citizens, community groups, businesses
owners, etc.
13. Performs other related duties as
required.
