JOB TITLE:  Police Officer (Crime Prevention)

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To instruct citizens, business owners, and students in crime prevention methods; to assist with various citizen participation programs presented by the Police Department.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Police Sergeant (Crime Prevention).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Receives instructions from supervisor pertaining to programs requested for presentation to civic groups, schools, the general public, etc.

 

2.         Researches information and prepares for presentations; writes lesson plans for each class and submits to supervisor for review.

 

3.         Presents programs regarding crime prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, rape prevention, auto theft, etc.; utilizes audiovisual equipment as required.

 

4.         Completes a report for each presentation, listing the location of the class, the number of persons in attendance, etc.

 

5.         Coordinates the Civilian Volunteers in Police Service program by conducting background investigations on potential volunteers, assigning volunteers to various divisions within the Police Department, and maintaining records of the number of hours they work.

 

6.         Assists with the Citizens' Police Academy by recruiting participants, conducting background investigations on potential participants, and scheduling instructors to teach classes about Police Department operations.

 

7.         Recruits persons to participate in the cadet program and conducts their background investigations; assigns cadets to various divisions in the Police Department, ensures they are rotated between divisions, and maintains their personnel files.

 

8.         Conducts classes to explain the Help End Auto Theft program; registers participants in the program and distributes vehicle stickers.

 

9.         Conducts home and business security checks upon request to ensure all possible precautions have been taken to avoid illegal entry.

 

10.       Trains citizens to conduct home security checks and marks property with identification numbers.

11.       Prepares and produces public service announcements regarding crime prevention and the various training programs offered to the public by the Police Department.

 

12.       Teaches classes for police recruits or in service training as required.

 

13.       Performs other related duties as required.
