JOB OBJECTIVE:  To ensure greenhouse operations; to plant and maintain plant materials and grounds at Department of Parks and Recreation facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Maintains greenhouse plants by performing propagation and germination activities, including preparation of soil mixtures, watering, weeding, cleaning and sterilizing pots and containers.

 

2.         Monitors greenhouse atmosphere to ensure optimum growing conditions, including irrigation, exhaust, and heating and cooling systems; notifies appropriate party for repairs.

 

3.         Schedules and directs the work activities of assigned Parks Maintenance Workers, part-time employees, and volunteers.

 

4.         Creates floral displays in parks and facilities; designs layout of plant beds; determines quantity and amount of plants and materials required; orders and propagates seeds and plants.

 

5.         Provides assistance in the implementation of Adopt-A-Park agreements, including ensuring the production and distribution of flyers to recruit volunteers and promote greenhouse sales, recruiting and scheduling volunteers, ordering seed and plants, germinating plants, and ensuring delivery of plants to work sites.

 

6.         Maintains seed and plant inventory for the greenhouse; contacts potential vendors to obtain price quotes; places orders.

 

7.         Notifies supervisor of problems with plant damage and disease and damage to equipment and facilities.

 

8.         Provides working supervision to assigned Parks Maintenance Workers and to part-time and volunteer workers.

 

9.         Mixes and applies chemical agents, including fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides.

 

10.       Receives checks and cash from greenhouse sales; issues receipts; verifies totals and provides to supervisor for deposit.

 

11.       Operates a pickup truck to pick up and transport equipment and materials.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Provides assistance with special events; sets-up and dissembles special event operations.

 

2.         Operates hand tools and light earth-moving equipment, including small backhoe, Bobcat, and front-end loader, to prepare sites for planting, transplanting, and removal of shrubs and trees.

 

3.         Operates chain saw, pole saw, hand saw, pruner, and other hand and power tools for tree trimming; utilizes shovels, rakes and other hand tools to prepare and maintain areas.

 

4.         Operates hand and tractor-mounted mowers and hand-held string trimmers to cut grass.

 

5.         Operates power hedge trimmers, blowers, edgers and hand shears to trim plants.

 

6.         Plants trees, shrubs and other plant materials; lays sod.

 

7.         Trims, cuts, and moves shrubs and other plants.

 

8.         Sharpens and repairs tools; checks level of fuel, oil, and other fluids before operating equipment; performs minor preventative maintenance on tractors and mowers.

 

9.         Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of the methods and techniques of mowing, planting, propagating, pruning, trimming, transplanting, and watering flowers, shrubs, trees, and turf.

 

Knowledge of the proper mixing and application of chemical agents, including fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides.

 

Knowledge of greenhouse and plant nursery operations.

 

Skill in the operation of hand tools.

 

Skill in the operation of an automatic transmission automobile.

 

Ability to perform manual labor.

 

Ability to keep simple records.

 

Ability to maintain an inventory of seed and plants.

 

Ability to collect and balance money.

 

Ability to compile reports.

 

Ability to provide working supervision to assigned personnel.

 

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through the completion of high school, two (2) years of experience in a commercial greenhouse, nursery sales, landscaping, lawn service, or a related area, and one (1) year of lead worker or supervisory experience.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
