JOB TITLE:  Leader (Public Works – Control Devices)

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  February 1997

 

ORG/POS #:  2250/1162

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To install, repair, and maintain traffic control and informational signs; to repair and maintain pavement-marking equipment.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the General Foreman (Control Devices).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Performs layout and application of street striping patterns, crosswalks, stop bars and parking lots, from blueprints and drawings.

 

2.         Operates and monitors gages on pavement-marking equipment to ensure proper temperature and pressure; ensures markings are applied correctly.

 

3.         Operates a forklift to load marking materials, including paint, thermoplastic, and glass beads into striping equipment; tests marking materials for width, length, and thickness to ensure proper dimensions during application.

 

4.         Performs preventive maintenance on pavement-marking equipment; repairs and replaces components on compressors, regulators, pumps, and paint and bead guns, utilizing repair manual specifications.

 

5.         Checks vehicles for oil, fuel level and other safety devices; completes work orders for the repair of vehicle engines and drive trains.

 

6.         Directs the work activities of assigned personnel involved in street striping, thermoplastic painting of lane legends, the maintenance of permanent and temporary traffic control and informational signs, and the building and repair of truck canopies.

 

7.         Operates hand tools and light power tools to install, repair and maintain traffic control and informational signs; removes obstructions from areas around signs.

 

8.         Reviews blueprints and work orders to determine equipment, material, and personnel required for assigned projects.

 

9.         Completes daily work records of time worked for personnel, equipment, and materials used.

 

10.       Operates a forklift to stock materials and supplies in storage areas.

 

11.       Notifies the General Foreman and Foreman I (Control Devices) of equipment malfunctions; refers questions or complaints from members of the public, regarding sign placement.

12.       Performs complex annual maintenance, including disassembly, repair and reassembly of all roadliner and airless striping equipment components.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides direct supervision to Laborers, Sign Maintenance Workers and Crew Leader.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of high school or related vocational technical course; at least one (1) year of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control devices and pavement markings; at least one (1) year of leadership experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class A or B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment; must obtain a valid Arkansas Class A (Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License with X endorsement within sixty (60) days of employment; must maintain licensure for duration of employment in this position.
