JOB TITLE:  Irrigation Specialist

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  July 1995

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To maintain and install irrigation and sprinkler systems; to care and maintain plant materials at various parks.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Parks Maintenance and Development Foreman (Landscape).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Repairs breaks and leaks in sprinkler and irrigation systems using hand tools and glueing compounds; traces old water lines, needing replacement or repair, to determine origin and length.

 

2.         Operates earth moving equipment, including backhoe and front end loader, to  excavate location; installs new water systems by digging trenches and laying lines.

 

3.         Maintains a sprinkler parts inventory by recording part numbers and count, and restocks parts as necessary; maintains records of parts used and types of repairs for each sprinkler location.

 

4.         Directs the activities of a crew of Parks Maintenance Workers and part-time seasonal employees.

 

5.         Operates a bucket truck and light duty trucks to transport materials to work sites and to pick up needed equipment and supplies; turns in work request.

 

6.         Maintains plants, grounds and sprinkler system in and around greenhouse; installs and maintains low voltage electrical wires involved in sprinkler operations.

 

7.         Uses hand tools and operates earth moving equipment to prepare sites for planting or transplanting of shrubs and small trees; lays sod in areas needing ground cover; uses shovels, rakes and other hand tools to maintain areas around plants.

 

8.         Sharpens, repairs and maintains hand tools and power equipment.

 

9.         Mixes and applies chemical fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, as required.

 

10.       Notifies appropriate supervisor of major problems with sprinkler installation and repair. plant damage or disease and damages to park facilities.

11.       Operates power saw to cut dead trees; performs building or equipment maintenance during inclement weather.

 

12.       Sets-up and disassembles special event operations; assists with Adopt-A-Park activities.

13.       Operates tractor mounted mowers and push mowers to cut grass in parks.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs work of moderate difficulty in the maintenance and installation of irrigation and sprinkler systems at various parks; performs work of moderate difficulty in the care and maintenance of plant materials.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Good knowledge of sprinkler system installation, maintenance and repair.

 

Some knowledge of plant requirements and care.

 

Skill in the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation and sprinkler systems.

 

Skill in the operation of earth moving equipment.

 

Skill in the use of hand tools.

 

Skill in the operation of tractor mounted mowing and spraying equipment.

 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to maintain parts inventory and sprinkler repair records.

 

Ability to direct the activities of a crew of full-time and part-time workers.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: 

 

Completion of high school or vocational technical school; at least one (1) year of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance; at least one (1) year of experience in irrigation and sprinkler installation and repair; at least one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: 

 

Must possess or obtain a valid Class "B" Arkansas Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand/walk; use the hands to manipulate levers, tools or equipment; reach with the hands and arms; and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to perform manual labor tasks.  The employee is occasionally required to sit while operating equipment; to climb onto equipment, climb ladders for construction or tree trimming or up or down embankments; and to talk with or listen to supervisors or crew members.  The employee is regularly required to lift or move items weighing up to 100 pounds.  Vision requirements include close vision to read work orders, distance and peripheral vision and depth perception to operative equipment or manipulate tools.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately noisy, with occasional periods of loud noise from equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, or weedeaters, etc.  The employee is regularly required to work in wet, humid conditions such as those in the greenhouse and in flower beds, work near moving mechanical parts such as lawnmowers, etc. Work around exhaust fumes from various equipment and dust and work in outdoor weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally required to work around chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides and with vibration from mowers and other lawn care equipment.
