JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: General Curator
MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE: April 1994

JOB OBJECTIVE: To supervise, assign and monitor work tasks
of the Curators; ensure healthy environment for Zoo animals through effective
animal management programs.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general direction from the
Director of the Zoo.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assigns work projects to Curators for
distribution to assigned staff; evaluates Curators' compliance with plans and
procedures through daily worksheets, animal reports, and observation.
2. Ensures maintenance of zoo equipment
and facilities; contacts Zoo Maintenance Foreman to complete repairs when
necessary.
3. Recommends exhibit design changes;
implements approved changes.
4. Determines when to engage
veterinarian; contacts veterinarian; assists veterinarian and keepers in
medical treatment when necessary.
5. Trains Curators in duties,
responsibilities and Zoo procedures.
6. Acquires, maintains and ensures
proper storage of animal feed, general Zoo supplies and other necessary
materials; operates assigned City automobile to transport animals and pick up
supplies.
7. Approves diet changes of animals as
needed.
8. Inspects animals for symptoms of
illness and injury, animal enclosures to ensure cleanliness and proper care of
animals, and facility and display repairs, as necessary.
9. Recommends animals as surplus or
needing replacement; ensures transportation arrangements and crates are secured
for export or import of animals.

Provides general supervision to Curators and
Veterinary Technician; immediate supervision to Zoo volunteers.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs work of average difficulty
in the supervision, assignment and monitoring of work tasks and projects
relating to animal care, Zoo facility maintenance, repair and construction
activities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of animal
diets, habits, and environmental needs, and behavior.
Considerable knowledge of exotic
animal physiology and required habitat.
Considerable knowledge of handling,
sedating, and transporting wild animals.
Considerable knowledge of federal,
state, and local laws on animal care, enclosures, and transportation
requirements.
Considerable knowledge of required
detailed animal record keeping.
Skill in the operation of automatic and
standard (manual) transmission automobiles.
Ability to work with and around exotic and
potentially dangerous wild animals.

Ability to recognize symptoms of disease or
injury and changes in behavior in animals.
Ability to administer first aid or medication as
required.
Ability to direct and review the activities of
Curators, construction workers, and community service workers.
Ability to work tactfully and effectively with
municipal officials, civic organizations, and the general public.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally
and in writing.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of high school; at least two years of college
course work in Zoology, Zoo Administration, Animal Husbandry, or a
related field; at least two years of experience working with animals in
a zoological park; at least one year of experience in a supervisory
capacity; Or any equivalent combination
of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial
Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the
duration of employment in this position.
