JOB TITLE:  Fire Safety Plans Review Specialist

 

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To review building plans and inspect construction projects in progress, excluding single family and duplex housing, to ensure compliance with life and fire safety codes and ordinances.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Fire Marshal and Captain.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.   Examines blueprints for all new and remodeled structures, excluding single family and duplexes to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and City fire safety codes and ordinances.

 

2.   Consults and advises, builders and/or contractors regarding necessary additions, deletions, corrections, and changes to building plans to comply with applicable codes.

 

3.   Conducts pre-construction and final inspection of new and remodeled structures, except single family and duplexes to ensure compliance with applicable codes.

 

4.   Approves drawings and blueprints which comply with applicable codes and returns same to Building Codes Manager or appropriate construction representative; returns drawings and blueprints which have code violation notations to the Building Codes Manager and the appropriate construction representative.

 

5.   Notifies supervisor of those parties refusing to comply with codes and ordinances; meetings are scheduled with the involved parties where positions are clarified and alternatives developed; when suitable alternatives cannot be reached by the parties, a letter is prepared and delivered to the City Attorney for a legal opinion.

 

6.   Maintains files and records including violations found and recommended corrective measures.

 

7.   Reinspects buildings or businesses found in violation of fire and safety codes to ensure that corrective action has been taken.

8.   Prepares daily and monthly reports of the total number of the plans reviewed, inspections conducted and finding with recommendations which bring the findings into compliance with code.

 

9.   Receives, investigates, and responds, as appropriate, to citizen complaints of fire safety hazards.

 

10.  Operates a personal computer to maintain data, prepare reports and provide correspondence as necessary; enters and accesses material safety data information (MSDS) in computer, per business address.

              FIRE SAFETY PLANS REVIEW SPECIALIST 

 

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs work of average difficulty in reviewing all building plans except for single family and duplexes to ensure compliance with fire safety ordinances contained in Life Safety Code 101 and all ordinances established by the City of Little Rock.

Examines blueprints for all new and remodeled structures, excluding single family and duplexes to ensure compliance with all applicable fire safety ordinances.

 

Consults and advises architects, builders, and/or contractors regarding the necessary additions, deletions, corrections, and changes to building plans in order to comply with applicable codes.

 

Conducts preconstruction and final inspections of new and remodeled structures, except single family and duplexes to ensure compliance with applicable codes.

 

Approves drawings and blueprints which comply with applicable codes and returns same to Building Codes Manager or appropriate construction representative; returns drawings and blueprints which have code violation notations to the Building Codes Manager and the appropriate construction representative.

 

Notifies the Fire Marshal of those parties refusing to comply with ordinances.

 

Testifies in court cases involving fire safety ordinance violation as required.

 

Consults with architects, engineers, builders, and or contractors to resolve problems during planning phase to help keep construction cost under control.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of Life Safety Code 101 and City ordinances governing fire safety.

 

Considerable knowledge of drawings and blueprints for building construction.

 

Skill in the operation of a desk calculator.

 

Ability to read and interpret complex commercial development plans and specifications.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to maintain detailed files and records.

 

Ability to recognize code violations at the construction site and on plans.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of high school; at least four years experience as a Firefighter or in the enforcement of fire safety codes; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arkansas Class "D" vehicle operator's license.
