JOB OBJECTIVE:  Promotes public safety by conducting fire inspections, fire investigations, and fire prevention demonstrations and ensures proper implementation of City ordinances and National Fire Protection Association codes.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Conducts on-site fire inspections of public and other buildings to determine fire hazards as far as public safety.

 

2.         Conducts inspections of private homes at the request of the owner.

 

3.         Enforces fire prevention codes by recommending to building owners and managers fire prevention and safety action necessary to meet compliance standards.

 

4.         Completes and submits daily inspection forms to the Battalion Chief maintaining cross index and alphabetical files on inspections performs and recommendations given for corrective safety action.

 

5.         Prepares monthly statements on the number of inspections performed, recommendations, special fire duty and meetings attended and submits reports to the Battalion Chief.

 

6.         Makes follow-up inspections to determine if corrective safety measures have been taken to ensure safety.

 

7.         Attends meetings and conferences at workshops to receive updated information relating to investigations, public education, and inspections.

 

8.         Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies when required.

 

9.         Performs public relations work by showing fire prevention and safety films and giving talks to schools and civic groups on fire prevention and safety at their request.

 

10.       Performs the duties of Firefighter as required.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of the mechanics of hydraulics.

 

Knowledge of modern fire-fighting principles, practices and methods.

 

Knowledge of fire prevention and investigation methods.

 

Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid procedures and techniques.

 

Knowledge of supervisory techniques.

 

Skill in the operation of complex hydraulic pressure measuring controls and gauges.

 

Ability to operate a heavy multigear truck in City traffic.

 

Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency situation.

 

Ability to work for long periods under physically and mentally demanding situations.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually acquired through serving as a current, regular status City of Little Rock Firefighter, and completing five (5) years of experience in this classification.  Applicants/employees must meet any other requirements established by the Civil Service Commission.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must obtain certification as a basic emergency medical technician (EMT) from the Arkansas Department of Health within six (6) months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
