JOB TITLE:  Dispatcher (Housing and Neighborhood Programs - Animal Services)

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  May 2000

 

ORG./POS. #:  1610/2626

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To receive and relay messages and information regarding the apprehension and impoundment of stray animals.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Foreman I (Animal Services - Field Operations).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Receives and relays citizens’ complaints and requests for services to available Animal Services workers.

 

2.         Maintains a daily log of all complaints and requests received by telephone and/or radio.

 

3.         Completes forms for adoptions and reclaims; collects appropriate fees and issues receipts.

 

4.         Operates a microcomputer to verify information received regarding lost animals; notifies owners when animals are located.

 

5.         Enters daily records of animals entering and leaving the shelter and reclaimed or adopted animals utilizing a microcomputer with spreadsheet and word processing software.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Serves as backup to office clerical staff as needed.

 

2.         Performs other related duties as required.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs work of moderate difficulty in receiving and relaying messages and information regarding the apprehension and impoundment of stray animals.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.

 

Some knowledge of computer fundamentals and business software, including word processing software.

 

Some knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations governing the use of two-way radio communication equipment.

 

Skill in the use of a two-way radio.

 

Skill in the operation of a microcomputer utilizing spreadsheet and word processing software.

 

Ability to collect money and issue receipts.

 

Ability to maintain hard copy and computer files and records.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: 

 

Completion of high school; at least one (1) year of experience in dispatching; at least one (1) year of general clerical experience, at least one (1) year of experience in microcomputer use; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
