JOB TITLE:  Demographic Analyst

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  November 1998

 

ORG/POS #:  1036/1370

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To plan and conduct demographic analyses relating to substance abuse.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Community Programs Operations Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.            Conducts surveys and studies to collect valid data; designs survey instruments (i.e., questionnaires) and/or modifies existing instruments.

 

2.            Analyzes numerical data from studies, surveys, and other sources, utilizing statistical software; monitors levels and trends of community indicators (e.g., specific crime events, health issues, etc.).

 

3.         Writes and prepares narrative and statistical reports of research findings and program updates, including community indicator reports; prepares charts, graphs, and tables of research findings, using spreadsheet software.

 

4.         Enters data and maintains computerized database on substance abuse indicators within the City of Little Rock.

 

5.            Prepares maps of data findings, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) software.

 

6.            Operates a microcomputer with database, mapping, spreadsheet, statistical, and word processing software.

 

7.            Establishes and maintains hard copy and computer files and record-keeping systems of information relating to substance abuse.

 

8.         Makes public presentations concerning substance abuse information to community organizations, neighborhood associations, and other organizations.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.            Conducts research to identify data from other sources; evaluates reliability of source information.

 

2.            Answers questions and provides technical information relating to substance abuse data to Department employees, members of the Fighting Back Policy Board, other City employees, citizens, and health care professionals.

3.            Provides information for the development of press releases, presentations, and other external communications.

 

4.            Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics.

 

Good knowledge of research and evaluation methods and techniques.

 

Good knowledge of survey techniques.

 

Good knowledge of computer fundamentals, including mapping, spreadsheet, statistical, and word processing software.

 

Some knowledge of the principles and practices of substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment.

 

Some knowledge of hard copy and computer filing and record-keeping systems.

 

Some knowledge of mapping computer software.

Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.

Ability to prepare graphical representations of data (e.g., charts, graphs, tables, etc.).

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally, with individuals and groups, and in writing.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: 

 

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Business Administration, Social Work, or Psychology, to have included at least six (6) semester hours of upper-level applied statistics coursework; at least two (2) years of experience in statistical research or data analysis, utilizing statistical software; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
