Eligibility for

9-1-1 CALL TAKERS

 

Essential Job Functions for this Position:

 

1.   Receives telephone calls for emergency or routine services; questions callers to obtain information to determine the appropriate response required; verifies and obtains pertinent information to dispatch emergency response units.

2.   Transfers emergency calls to other agencies as required.

3.   Forwards routine calls to the proper City department or agency.

4.   Receives and provides information regarding City services after regular business hours.

5.   Completes a report form on non-emergency incidents or accidents by obtaining information such as name, address, type of offense, date, brief description, etc.

6.   Enters information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch system for police and fire dispatch.

7.   Generates incident numbers for callers after writing an incident report.

8.   Transfers non-emergency calls to the proper division in the Police and Fire Departments.

9.   Completes supplemental forms which contain additional information that will be attached to original report forms.

10. Testifies in court regarding information reported over the telephone.

11. Enters information from Police Incident Reports and Accidents Reports into the local IBM system.


12. Enters information in the Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer systems such as stolen vehicles, license plates, missing persons, et cetera.

 

Eligibility Requirements

 

Applicants who wish to be placed on the general eligibility list for 9-1-1 Call Taker can test once every six months to be eligible for referral upon occurrence of vacancies. 

 

In addition to passing all selection components, applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for hire:

 

1.      An applicant must be at least 21 years of age.

2.      An applicant must have no felony convictions.

3.      An applicant must be a citizen of the United States as of the day of the written test.

 

Testing Information

 

Typically, 9-1-1 Call Taker tests will be administered periodically.  Please call (501) 371-4505 or (501) 371-4590 to obtain the testing dates and times.  Applicants should allow 4 to 6 hours for testing.  The test will be administered at the following location:

West Wing of City Hall

An individual interested in taking the 9-1-1 Call Taker exam should arrive for the test 15-20 minutes prior to test time.  Parking is usually available behind City Hall and marked “City Hall Business.”

 

Applicants may bring a resumé or may complete an education and job history form on the day of the test.

 

Selection Process and Procedures 

 

(NOTE:  Steps 1-4 must be passed before proceeding to  Steps 5-6.)

 

Step 1 - Applicants must complete and/or submit the following at the time of the written test:

 

1.      City of Little Rock Employment Application.

2.      A complete resumé with employment dates and job duties.

3.      Authorization for Release of Information.

 

Step 2 - The Written Test – Applicants must take the written test on the appointed test date.

 

Reminder:  It is the applicant’s responsibility to be in the test room at the appointed time, date and location.  Late arrivals are not permitted to test that day and will need to return on another test date.  Applicants must provide a picture ID to test.

 

Step 3 - Audio Exam – The Audio portion will be administered immediately following the written exam.  Applicants will listen to an audio tape and will be required to answer specific questions based on the information contained in the audio tape.

 

Step 4 - Keyboarding Skills Test – Applicants are required to demonstrate a proficient level of both speed and accuracy upon a computer keyboard.  This portion immediately follows the audio exam.

 

Referral - Applicants who successfully pass Steps 1-4 will be referred to the Hiring Authority for further consideration.

 

Step 5 - Background Investigation – A background investigation will be conducted by the Police Department of the City of Little Rock.  A background investigation is necessary to ensure that applicants will be eligible for certification by the Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC) in computer terminal operations.  Therefore, a signed Authorization for the Release of Information document will be required to conduct the background investigation.  The background investigation will be conducted upon referred candidates only.

 

Step 6 - Psychological and Drug Screens – Such evaluations will be administered only for those candidates who have been offered employment and will be conducted at the City’s expense.

HOLIDAYS - Eight (8) paid holidays per year.

LONGEVITY PAY - After completing one full year of employment with the City of Little Rock, an employee is paid “longevity” bonus pay.  This bonus is paid semi-annually.

INSURANCE - Paid health, life, disability, dental, and optical insurance for the employee; partial payment of health, dental, and optical insurance premiums for dependents.

FREE UNIFORMS

RETIREMENT PLAN - Participation after one (1) year of full-time employment.  Employee contributes 3.5% on a pre-tax basis.  City contributes 4%.  100% vesting after five (5) years.

PAID TIME OFF - Employees with up to 3 years of service will accrue Paid Time Off (PTO) at the rate of 160 hours annually.  Paid Time Off may be used for vacation, personal illness, funeral leave/attendance, illness of a family member or other personal business.  Paid Time Off maximum balance is 320 hours.  For information about PTO for employees with more than 3 years of service, contact a Human Resources Department representative.
