JOB TITLE:  Crime Analyst

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  July 1998

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To analyze police information reports in order to identify crime trends and recommend corrective action.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general direction from Police Sergeant (Planning and Research).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Analyzes daily offense and arrest reports to identify crime patterns, including suspect characteristics and demographic information as they relate to certain crimes.

 

2.         Prepares monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual statistical reports for management.

 

3.         Communicates crime trend, suspect characteristic, and intelligence data to operational components of the Police Department.

 

4.         Inputs data into computer program systems to prepare reports, graphs and maps for presentations to management concerning crime trends and necessary corrective action.

 

5.         Recommends staffing patterns to management in order to anticipate and combat criminal activity.

 

6.         Enters crime data into a microcomputer using mapping and spreadsheet software.

 

7.         Prepares Special Information Bulletins and Directed Patrol Requests using crime statistical data; disseminates information to appropriate personnel.

 

8.         Contacts governmental agencies to gather criminal statistical data and compare crime analysis methods.

 

9.         Researches federal and state laws and local ordinances; responds to special crime information requests.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Makes public presentations concerning crime information and prevention to civic organizations and neighborhood watch groups.

 

2.         Testifies in court regarding crime data.

 

3.         Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

 

Good knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics.

 

Good knowledge of research and evaluation methods and techniques.

 

Good knowledge of computer fundamentals and business software, including database, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

 

Some knowledge of the techniques, methods and procedures used in effective law enforcement.

 

Some knowledge of federal, state, local laws and ordinances.

 

Some knowledge of mapping computer software.

Ability to write and prepare statistical and narrative reports.

 

Ability to recommend corrective action regarding crime trends and criminal activity.

Ability to read and interpret federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Statistics, Mathematics, Business Administration, or a related area; at least two (2) years of experience in statistical research, data analysis, mapping, or a related area; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
