JOB
OBJECTIVE: To write, edit, modify, and debug computer
programs to meet data processing and information storage and retrieval requirements
for City departments.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Applications
Development Manager.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Writes,
edits, and debugs new computer programs for assigned projects, including
necessary records and desired output, using COBOL II, OS/2, AIX/UNIX, ORACLE,
TCP/IP, Micro Focus, SQL, and other program development tools.
2. Updates
and modifies computer programs to improve efficiency.
3. Writes
programs to access and print information for special projects.
4. Inputs
program information and other documentation into a computer terminal.
5. Tests
new programs to ensure that logic and syntax are correct, and that program
results are accurate.
6. Documents
all programs by listing a description of the program, special instructions, and
any changes made in file programs.
7. Prepares
operations run sheets and explains special instructions to computer operators.
8. Maintains
records necessary to review and update progress of assigned projects.

GENERAL
STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs work of average
difficulty in writing, editing, modifying and debugging computer programs
on a VSE operating system, utilizing IBM COBOL II, OS/2 and SQL languages.

REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable
knowledge
of computer languages, including IBM COBOL II, OS/2 and SQL or AIX/UNIX,
ORACLE, TCP/IP.
Considerable
knowledge
of computer logic and flow charting.
Good
knowledge
of mathematical and statistical principles and formulas.
Skill in the operation of a
computer terminal and personal computer keyboard.
Ability to write, edit, modify and
debug computer programs to achieve desired output.
Ability communicate effectively, both
orally and in writing.

ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of
at least two (2) years of college or vocational-technical school coursework
in Computer Science or a related area; at least two (2) years of experience
in mainframe computer programming, which includes at least one (1) year of
experience working in an IBM/VSE or IBM/AIX, ORACLE, TCP/IP environment; OR any equivalent combination of experience
and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
