JOB TITLE: Computer Programmer - Senior
MAINTENANCE

JOB
OBJECTIVE: To design, write, edit, modify, and debug
computer programs to meet data processing and information storage and retrieval
requirements for City departments.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Applications
Development Manager.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Writes,
edits, and debugs new computer programs for assigned projects, including necessary
records and desired output, using COBOL II or COBOL L/E programming language,
DB/2 Universal Database, VSAM, and other program development tools.
2. Installs
specialized package software to conform to current hardware and software
specifications; develops custom programs (as required by user groups) to
enhance existing software.
3. Assists
the Programmer Analysts in designing computer programs, VSAM file and record
layouts, and DB/2 database tables.
4. Updates
and modifies computer programs to improve efficiency.
5. Writes
programs to access and print information for special projects.
6. Inputs
program information and other documentation into a computer terminal.
7. Tests
new programs to ensure that logic and syntax are correct, and that program
results are accurate; assists lower-level programmers with programming
assignments.
8. Documents
all programs by listing a description of the program, special instructions, and
any changes made in VSAM files and DB/2 database tables.
9. Prepares
operations run sheets and explains special instructions to computer operators.
10. Maintains
records necessary to review and update progress of assigned projects.

REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable
knowledge
of computer languages, including IBM COBOL II or COBOL L/E, VSAM, and DB/2
Universal Database.
Considerable
knowledge
of computer logic and flow charting.
Good
knowledge
of computer program design methods and techniques.
Good
knowledge
of mathematical and statistical principles and formulas.
Skill in the operation of a
computer terminal and personal computer keyboard.
Ability to design computer
programs, VSAM file and record layouts and DB/2 database tables.

ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of
at least two (2) years of college or vocational technical coursework in
Computer Science or a related field; at least four (4) years of experience
in mainframe computer programming in a VSE, MVS, or OS/390 environment, which
includes two (2) years of experience in program development or four
(4) years of experience in program maintenance, including editing,
modifying, and debugging computer programs; at least two (2) years of
experience with VSAM and DB/2 relational database, or equivalent; OR any equivalent combination of experience
and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
