JOB TITLE: Communications Equipment Technician

JOB
OBJECTIVE: To install, maintain, and repair
telecommunications and peripheral equipment.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Communications
Equipment Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Installs
and connects new telephone related equipment; installs wiring required to
connect equipment to the telephone system.
2. Repairs
malfunctioning electronic equipment, including
terminals, electronic telephone switches, 9-1-1 telephone equipment, and
sound systems.
3. Determines
cause of malfunctions by using electronic test equipment and technical manuals;
contacts local and national vendors to research malfunctions.
4. Recommends
changes in the telephone system to improve efficiency or reduce maintenance
problems.
5. Performs
preventive maintenance on telephones, peripheral equipment and telephone
switching equipment.
6. Operates
an assigned City vehicle in the performance of essential functions.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains
inventory of replacement equipment and spare parts; orders parts as needed to
maintain stock levels.
2. Provides
assistance in the design and assembling of special purpose electronic test
equipment.
3. Provides
information to City departments concerning the type and quantity of telephone
equipment to be installed to provide a desired service.
4. Maintains
a library of technical manuals for the maintenance and repair of electronic
equipment.
5. Performs
other related duties as required.

REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good
knowledge
of basic electronic principles.
Good
knowledge
of maintenance requirements for electronic communications equipment.
Skill in the use of test meters
and other electronic equipment.
Skill in the operation of an
automatic transmission automobile.
Skill in the use of hand tools.
Ability to locate malfunctioning
electronic components by the use of test equipment and technical manuals.
Ability to communicate effectively
with employees of City departments and outside suppliers.
Ability to read and interpret
technical manuals for electronic equipment.
ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation
from a vocational technical school program in Electronics; at least one (1)
year of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic or telephone
equipment; OR any equivalent combination
of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities.
