JOB OBJECTIVE:  Commands and coordinates the efforts of fire companies within a specified battalion by supervising and directing firefighters and equipment to save lives and preserve property in the most effective manner.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Assigns and directs fire personnel involved in firefighting and rescue activities within an assigned battalion.

 

2.            Monitors manpower availability and notifies the Battalion Chief at Station #1 of manpower shortages in order to secure replacements.

 

3.         Ensures the availability of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment through inspections of stations and equipment; directs subordinates in obtaining necessary replacements.

 

4.            Develops and recommends battalion and Department improvements; requests new and replacement equipment.

 

5.            Supervises regular pre-fire planning inspections of private businesses, schools, hospitals, and other facilities and locations within the assigned battalion.

 

6.            Supervises maintenance and cleanliness of equipment, stations, and the dress of firefighters through regular on-site inspections within the assigned battalion.

 

7.            Requisitions supplies for assigned battalion and takes annual inventory on fire station facilities and equipment.

 

8.            Prepares tentative annual budget for assigned battalion; assists in the preparation of the Fire Department budget.

 

9.            Monitors daily technical fire manual and battalion study programs of each company within the battalion to ensure firefighting personnel are kept abreast of changes in the battalion, firefighting techniques and rescue practices.

 

10.            Maintains assigned firefighters' performance and training records.

 

11.            Responds to rescue and emergency medical calls within assigned battalion; administers emergency medical care, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to injured individuals.

 

12.            Evaluates and routes regular reports from companies regarding injuries, accidents, or equipment malfunctions to an Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief.

 

13.       Serves as Battalion Chief in other Fire Department divisions as assigned.

 

14.            Performs the duties of Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Engineer, and Fire Captain as required.

1.            Performs other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  assigned Fire Captains, Fire Apparatus Engineers, and Firefighters.
