JOB TITLE:  Automotive Technician I

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  April 1999

 

ORG/POS #:  6040/2807, 1143

 

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform a variety of skilled maintenance and minor repair services on a routine preventive and corrective basis for City vehicles and light equipment.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Service Coordinator I and Automotive Team Leader.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Utilizes diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment to diagnose and repair minor malfunctions with City vehicles and equipment.

 

2.         Orders repair parts and materials required for shop repairs.

 

3.         Measures fuel and oil reserves in storage tanks and maintains fuel sites.

 

4.         Repairs defective vehicle and equipment components, including air and hydraulic systems, manual transmissions, automatic drive lines, ignition systems and other malfunctioning components.

 

5.         Performs minor welding and tacking tasks.

 

6.         Installs and adjusts brakes, suspension assemblies and aligns front and rear wheels.

 

7.         Completes work order for each vehicle and unit serviced, listing items replaced and materials used, repair notes and vehicle test results; notifies the supervisor of major repair and replacement requirements.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

 

Some knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion, diesel, gasoline, butane fuel engines, and related mechanical systems.

 

Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety precautions of automotive and construction equipment trades.

 

Skill in the care and use of hand and light power tools.

 

Skill in the use of special diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment.

 

Skill in the operation of automatic and standard (manual) transmission automobiles.

 

Ability to diagnose vehicle malfunctions.

 

Ability to keep accurate records and complete work orders.

 

Ability to read and write.

 

Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.

Ability to note defects, damage, and wear in vehicle systems and automotive/equipment components.

 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to lift 100 pounds and carry weights up to 75 pounds.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of a standard high school course and/or vocational school courses in automotive mechanics; at least one (1) year of work experience as an automotive mechanic or mechanic assistant; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License with X endorsement within 90 days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess the tools required for this position by the Department of Fleet Services within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain required tools in working condition for the duration of employment in this position.
