JOB TITLE:  Automotive Technician Assistant

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  June 2001

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To perform a variety of skilled maintenance and minor repair services on a routine preventive and corrective basis for City vehicles and light equipment.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Service Coordinator I and Automotive Team Leader.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Provides assistance in the diagnosis and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

 

2.         Repairs and provides assistance in repairs of defective vehicle and equipment components, including lighting systems, brake systems, audio equipment and other malfunctioning components.

 

3.         Completes work order for each vehicle and unit serviced, listing items replaced and materials used; notifies supervisor of repair and replacement requirements.

 

4.         Performs oil changes, lubrications and maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment.

 

5.         Performs vehicle and parts pickup and delivery functions.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Orders repair parts and materials required for shop repairs from the Fleet Department Parts Storeroom.

 

2.         Provides assistance with brake replacements, suspension assemblies and front and rear wheel alignment procedures.

 

3.         Sharpens, repairs, and replaces cutting edges on mowing and cutting machinery.

 

4.         Prepares new vehicles and equipment for service by installing decals, wiring ancillary equipment, and mounting add-on equipment.

 

5.         Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

 

Some knowledge of the operation and maintenance principles of vehicles and/or machinery.

 

Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety precautions of automotive and related equipment.

 

Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools.

 

Skill in the use of diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment.

 

Skill in the operation of automatic and standard (manual) transmission automobiles.

 

Ability to assist in the diagnosis of vehicle malfunctions.

 

Ability to keep accurate records and complete work orders.

 

Ability to read and write.

 

Ability to operate various types of light vehicles and equipment.

 

Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.

 

Ability to note defects, damage, and wear in vehicle systems and automotive/equipment components.

 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to lift 100 pounds and carry weights up to 75 pounds.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of a high school or vocational-technical school course in automotive mechanics; at least one (1) year of experience as an automotive mechanic or mechanic assistant; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess the tools required for this position by the Department of Fleet Services within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain required tools in working condition for the duration of employment in this position.
