JOB TITLE:  Automotive Team Leader

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  April 1999

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To provide technical assistance to Automotive Technicians engaged in City vehicle and equipment repairs; to perform a wide range of highly skilled, major mechanical diagnoses and repairs of all types of vehicular equipment.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general direction from the Service Coordinator I.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Provides assistance to the Service Coordinator I in assigning work to Automotive Technicians I and II and Automotive Technician Assistant; ensures minimum turnaround time for scheduled repairs and inspections to meet the division’s daily service standards.

 

2          Directs the work activities of assigned Automotive Technicians in the absence of the Service Coordinator I.

 

3.         Road tests and inspects units to identify needed repairs; performs road tests and final inspections of all completed work to ensure all phases of preventive and corrective maintenance have been completed to established standards.

 

4.         Coordinates and adjusts schedules for periodic routine preventive maintenance for all City vehicles.

 

5.         Participates in and instructs Automotive Technicians in the more difficult mechanical work such as disassembling diesel combustion engines, transmissions, and other major repair work.

 

6.         Inspects and approves completed work including vehicle modifications such as adding racks, boxes, tanks, and beds to vehicles and equipment.

 

7.         Troubleshoots on rebuilt assemblies, components, electrical and hydraulic systems for operational efficiency.

 

8.         Reconditions and replaces defective parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings, using sleeve puller, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.

 

9.         Completes work orders and technical reports of weekly work activities for the assigned unit for use by the Service Coordinator I.

 

10.       Identifies replacement parts and materials; requisitions tools, equipment, and other needed supplies.

 

11.       Implements an inventory control system for tools and shop equipment to prevent losses and ensure adequate supplies for completing daily work assignments.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of the method, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

Considerable knowledge of the operating and preventive maintenance requirements of light and heavy equipment and vehicles.

 

Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of heavy-duty mechanical maintenance and repair work.

 

Skill in the care and use of tools for all phases of heavy-duty mechanical maintenance and repair work.

 

Skill in the use of special diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment.

 

Skill in the operation of automatic and standard (manual) transmission automobiles.

 

Ability to diagnose vehicle malfunctions of all types.

 

Ability to keep accurate records and complete work orders.

 

Ability to read and write.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

 

Ability to operate various types of vehicles and equipment.

 

Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.

 

Ability to lift and carry weight up to and approximately 75 pounds.

 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to direct the work activities of assigned employees.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of high school or vocational technical courses in automotive mechanics; at least four (4) years experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic in all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair; at least one (1) year of lead worker experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License within 90 days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

 

Must possess the tools required for this position by the Department of Fleet Services within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain required tools in working condition for the duration of employment in this position.
