JOB TITLE:  Assistant Aquatics Specialist

 

MAINTENANCE REVIEW DATE:  May 2000

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To assist in the development and supervision of the Aquatics programs for the City’s Fitness Center.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Receives general supervision from the Aquatics Specialist.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.         Assists in the development and implementation of aquatics programs for Fitness Center members.

 

2.         Assigns and supervises the work activities of part-time lifeguards, cash register operators, and pool managers, as assigned.

 

3.         Cleans pool by operating indoor and outdoor filter systems and pool vacuum; tests the chemical balance of the swimming pool daily and adds chemicals as necessary.

 

4.         Maintains records of swimming pool chemical level test results, and maintains chemical inventory for the pool.

 

5.         Assists in the development of schedules, accepting reservations, and maintaining participant records for aquatic programs.

 

6.         Reserves the swimming pool for use by swimming teams, citizen groups and others.

 

7.         Operates cash register in the collection of fees for Fitness Center admission or for swimming programs and events.

 

8.         Teaches swimming techniques and skills to participants or assists part-time instructors in program curriculum.

 

9.         Conducts in-house training and workshops for part-time Fitness Center staff, as assigned.

 

10.       Serves as backup to the Aquatics Specialist during absences.

 

11.       Performs other related duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides immediate supervision to assigned part-time, temporary, contract and volunteer staff.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Considerable knowledge of life guarding methods and techniques.

 

Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements for swimming pools.

 

Good knowledge of aquatic exercise programs.

 

Good knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid.

 

Skill in the testing of swimming pool chemical levels.

Ability to collect fees.

 

Ability to maintain records on program participants, part-time employees, and swimming pools.

 

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and employees.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Completion of least one (1) year of college coursework in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or a related area; at least one (1) year of experience in conducting aquatics programs, or a related area; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must possess certification as a Lifeguard Training Instructor (LTI) from the American Red Cross, within eighteen (18) months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.
