OBJECTIVE: To develop and supervise the Aquatics
Programs for the City's Fitness Center.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Receives general supervision from the Assistant Fitness
Center Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Develops
and implements aquatics programs for Fitness Center members, with approval from
the Fitness Center Supervisor.
2. Assigns
and supervises the work activities of the Assistant Aquatics Specialist and
part-time lifeguards.
3. Teaches
or hires outside instructors to teach swimming lessons, water aerobics,
lifeguard training, etc.
4. Develops
and schedules special events such as lap swimming and aquatic exercising.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Tests
the chemical balance of the swimming pool daily; adds chlorine and other
chemicals as necessary.
2. Develops
schedules and accepts reservations for participation in aquatics programs;
maintains participant rosters.
3. Collects
fees from individuals participating in aquatics programs.
4. Reserves
the swimming pool for use by swimming teams, citizen groups, etc.
5. Performs other related duties as
required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides general supervision to the Assistant
Aquatics Specialist.

REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable
knowledge
of the operation and maintenance requirements for swimming pools.
Considerable
knowledge
of aquatic exercise programs.
Considerable
knowledge
of lifeguarding methods and techniques.
Considerable
knowledge
of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.
Skill in the testing of swimming
pool chemical levels.
Skill in the application of
swimming pool chemicals.
Ability to develop and implement
aquatics programs.
Ability to assign and review the
work activities of assigned staff.
Ability to teach swimming lessons,
lifeguard training, and water aerobics.
Ability to develop and maintain
schedules for aquatic events.
Ability to collect fees.

ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of
at least two (2) years of college coursework in Recreation Administration,
Physical Education, or a related area; at least two (2) years of experience
in developing and conducting aquatics programs, or a related area; at least one
(1) year of supervisory experience; OR
any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the
required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL
REQUIREMENT:
Must possess
certification as a Lifeguard Training Instructor (LTI) from the American Red
Cross, within eighteen (18) months of employment and maintain certification for
the duration of employment.
